Battery charger connected to battery with cell plugs loosened.

Plug the battery charger into the mains and switch it on.

Leave the battery charging overnight. In the morning the charger should indicate that the battery is fully charged.

Switch off and unplug the charger, remove the charger clips from the battery (negative first and then positive), and refit the cell plugs before moving the battery.

Refit the battery to the car: see section “Changing a car battery,” for guidance.

With the battery fully charged, the car should now start. If it still does not start, it could be that the battery is faulty or there is a problem elsewhere with the vehicle. At this point it is recommended that you seek the advice of an auto-electrician or look online for help. Although this book does give guidance on how to fit a new car battery, without further investigation you could end up buying a new battery unnecessarily, and not resolving the problem.

Battery charging tips

• if you have not followed the guidance in the section “How to check battery electrolyte levels,” your battery charger may tell you that the battery is fully charged when it isn’t. This may be because there is insufficient electrolyte (the liquid inside the battery that allows electricity to flow from one plate to another – between positive and negative electrodes in each battery cell) which will cause the charger to give a false reading

• If the battery keeps going flat, there is possibly something wrong with the battery or the alternator, or something else is draining the power. Investigate further online or seek the advice of an auto-electrician.

How to check battery electrolyte levels

Checking battery electrolyte levels is an important first step before other fixes, such as charging the battery or using a battery booster.

You do not need to disconnect the car battery in order to check levels: this a quick job which could extend battery life.

Types of car battery

There are essentially two types of battery: sealed (or maintenance-free), and unsealed.

Usually, a label on the battery will identify which type of battery it is. If the battery is sealed (maintenance-free), you do not need to be concerned about electrolyte levels.
